Introduction to Marketing

Redesigned SLCC’s Introduction to Marketing course - making it less dependent on external materials, simplifying the navigation, and reducing the cost to students. This project started December 2014 and is currently in progress.

Introduction to Marketing has the highest enrollment numbers, in comparison to other marketing classes at SLCC. Redesigning this course provided content consistency. As a prerequisite to higher level marketing classes, the redesign allowed the material to remain current and relevant in the marketing field. Perspectives and guidance were provided by two faculty members and nine students who assisted in the development of the new course.

This class gives students a basic understanding of marketing principles and customer-to-business relations that influence customer behavior. Since being redesigned, this course is taught with a service-learning component. This provides students invaluable hands-on experience, while giving back to the community.

Course Navigation

The video below was developed to provide students with a basic overview of the course navigation. The course was explained in several different formats and through a variety of multimedia to help students understand the due dates, assignments and expectations.

Instructor Resources and Presentations

Teachers and students alike have become unaffected by conventional classroom presentations, where they’re confronted with slide after side containing too much information in quick, disjoined succession. All materials (presentations, case studies and videos) are hosted on-web based platforms to allow adjunct instructors and concurrent enrollment teachers instant access to up-to-date materials, which also provides a more uniform method of delivery.

Below, you will find a few examples of the shared presentations containing videos and links to case studies.

ePortfolio Guide

The ePortfolio guide was developed to provide students clear instruction on how to develop an easy-to-navigate and user-friendly ePortfolio. This includes suggested guidelines on how to include assignments and reflections in the display of their ePortfolio as well as access to other helpful resources.

Group Work

The lecture version of the class is now semi-flipped. Group work plays a major role in the class, students now work as a part of 5 different organized teams during the semester, allowing the student better networking opportunities, and allowing for a more friendly atmosphere.

What They Said

"I just wanted to thank you for a great class last semester. I learned a lot! I entered the class unsure of what sector of business I wanted to major in, but I left pretty excited about marketing.

I just started a marketing internship with the BYU soccer franchise (they actually own a franchise in the PDL, the minor league 2 levels below Real Salt Lake). It is pretty cool to apply principles I learned from your class in the real world. It is a really cool internship, because the club has a new coach and we are helping him re-brand the club's image. If we do a good job our work may be the foundation for the club's brand for years to come!

Thanks again for such a great class, I was a little disappointed that I didn't get another semester at SLCC to take your digital marketing class."

Trevor Kunz, Marketing 1030 Student

"One of the nicest teachers I've ever had. He spent so much time working on our project with us and helped us get published in a newspaper!"
