Digital Marketing (MKTG 2810)- Round Two

In Fall 2015, we re-started the initiative to rebuild Marketing 2810. The pilot went well, but we learned from a few mistakes and round two will be better than ever.

The lack of structure in the pilot, which resulted from not having an actual textbook for this class, confused some of our students and made them rely heavily on in-class materials. The syllabus was adjusted this time around, adding a requirement for the students to access lynda.com, an online resource with videos, papers, and other learning materials about varied subjects. The SLC Public library allows for free access to Lynda.com, which maintained the open access appeal for students. The regular updates on Lynda.com will also help us keep this class current as we revise it every semester to remain on the cutting edge of Digital Marketing.

Main Updates

The Lynda.com materials required for preparation also allowed us to come closer to a flipped classroom. This course is a 3 hour class taught at 7pm and needed to be broken up.

The new structure of the class required students to watch/read the assigned materials ahead of time. This freed up the class time for students to review material and allowed for project time during class.

Due to the nature of the class, attendance was highly valued through participation points and assignments. The mid-term and final were very relevant to the course materials discussed and were assigned as student presentations. An opportunity to substitute the midterm and final for a Google Certificate was also provided to challenge motivated students. The Google Certificate is a professional accreditation that Google offers to individuals who complete certification exams. It is highly recognized in the digital marketing community, it is free to take, and the materials are updated regularly by Google.

What They Said

"Wow!!!! This is really fabulous Ahmad. I've taken on-line courses before but none of them was as well structured as yours. I think what you've done here is very thorough and provides clear information about the course and your expectations. I really can't see anything missing that I would want to see if I were a learner in your class."
