Business Presentations (MKTG 1300)- Complete Redesign

Implemented a complete redesign for the business presentation course offered by the marketing department in Fall 2015. The new class structure offers a free platform for the students through a wide range of web-based resources to help them succeed in the class.

Class Structure

The first step in implementing this was to create web-based slides that may be accessed by instructors and students. As the course mentor, the slides will help me insure a more uniform method of delivery; as we revise the course, the updates will be readily available and can be reused by other instructors. The platforms also make it easy to remix the materials as other OER content is identified.

To review the topics and to partially compensate for the absence of a textbook, short web-based quizzes are presented to teams at the beginning of each class. These quizzes may also be revised and reused easily as other resources are found/identified. These quizzes revisit the key concepts of the previous week’s lecture, and even though they aren’t graded, they help students retain the materials presented, they start the energy in the classroom, and they also help build a classroom community.

Not having a book in this class also needed to be accounted for to support students who didn’t completely comprehend a lecture or who missed a class. A series of recorded lectures are made available to the students through Canvas. These lectures are created in-house, which gives us the right to control copies of the content and duplicate it to benefit other instructors, and redistribute them as needed. The short videos help explain the main concepts while going through the same slides used in the class.

Another way to overcome the absence of a textbook is by creating and sharing an Evernote Notebook. This notebook is made available upon request to the students, who can post their notes to it for extra credit. This also helps build a community in the classroom as well as give students other perspectives on a single topic. The notebook also acts as an easy way to remix the updated content into the existing instructional resources made available to the students.

Relevant Ted Talks, Articles and YouTube videos are also presented during the semester in the form of an online discussion. These all act as extra resources to engage students’ critical thinking skills. This content is not owned by SLCC but is available to reuse and helps the students retain the materials covered in class.

Finally, the semi-flipped environment heavily relies on weekly class projects where students work in teams to apply the concepts learned and receive real time feedback from the instructor.

Future Plans

  • More emphasis on participation and peer critiques will be added to help emphasize the main points of this class
  • Small modifications towards removing group work, and adding video capabilities could lead to an online version of this class
