Cross Departmental Collaboration Project- Certificate of Proficiency in Digital Communications

In 2014, SLCC Marketing Management’s Program Advisory Committee identified a need in the market for a Digital Marketing Certificate. This stemmed from a need in the market for a well-rounded student who not only understands marketing, but also is proficient in design, communication, and social media skills.

The Program Advisory Committee (PAC) consists of professionals in the field who come together to give us input about current market trends and needs and suggestions how to build curricula that prepare students to meet those needs.

A group of us from the Marketing Department reached out to the Visual Arts department at SLCC and presented this idea. Together, we brainstormed ways to make this possible. We agreed on pursuing a unique certificate that utilizes the classes and expertise of several departments including Marketing, Visual Arts, Communications and English. Because of the size of our student population, and the nature of our campuses, we also agreed to provide an online option for this cross departmental certificate. As of October 2015, we are still in the process of navigating through the logistics and the procedures necessary for this certificate to take place.

The members involved at this point are very passionate about the project and about the need for this in today’s market. We will continue to pursue this certificate over the school year and hope to have it in the catalogs by July, 2017.
