DECA 2016

I acted as the academic advisor for DECA in 2016. The year was very eventful, the students were energetic, and the results were very rewarding.

Making Strides in Utah

As part of the service learning this semester SLCC Collegiate DECA participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. Due to the nature of our business related student organization we were asked to run the official merchandise booth. Students sold official merchandise and raised funds to help take a step towards making a difference.

MG Walk

Another service project the SLCC Collegiate DECA participated in was the MG walk. We all gathered to recognize those we love who live with myasthenia gravis and to celebrate the research we’ve helped to develop through our fundraising efforts.

Fall Leadership Conference

I acted as an adviser for Collegiate DECA students for the annual DECA Fall Leadership conference in Park City. Students had the opportunity to be in groups with other college from the area to work on case study presented by Adobe Analytics. They were able to improve upon skills in marketing, team building, speaking, critical thinking, presenting, managing company responsibilities, problem solving and professionalism.

All of the SLCC students did very well, and we had quite a few that placed in the top teams.

Pie Fundraiser

To raise funds for DECA we partnered with the SLCC Culinary Club to bake and sell pies around Thanksgiving. I worked with the DECA officers to develop flyers that allowed this to end up being a very successful fundraiser for both groups.

State Career Development Conference

Attended the State Career Development Conference February 19-20 with five DECA students. I am very proud of all the hard work each of them did. Two of our students placed top six in the Sports and Entertainment Marketing case study competition, and were qualified to compete at the national level.

International Career Development Conference

Four students attended the International Career Development Conference. This year it was held in Washington D.C. April 16-19. Students participated in various case studies, worked in groups with DECA students across the country to create presentations, and attended seminars to help develop skills for a career in business. Although I was not able to attend the conference with them I worked tirelessly to coach them over the phone and give them much needed moral support.

What They Said

Ahmad was an invaluable part of DECA for me. He was more than just an advisor. He was someone I could depend on to help guide me in the right direction, and push me to challenge myself. I have benefited greatly from being in DECA with Ahmad and I will be forever grateful for his mentorship and insight. In the words of Benjamin Franklin, “ Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.”
